Bill Stetz, 1963

Bill Stetz was a 6’3”, 250 lb. All-State defensive lineman that played football at CMH from 1959 (Pat O’Halloran) to 1962 (Joe Blanco).

Bill started on varsity as a sophomore and was a part of CMH’s first undefeated conference championship. His junior season was Joe Blanco’s first season and a repeat as undefeated conference champions, eventually losing to Madison Edgewood. During his time at CMH, Bill was heavily recruited by Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Northwestern. At the conclusion of his senior year, he received many awards. He was named the United Press International All State Team, All Catholic Team, All American Team as well as the all-county and all conference teams.

Bill graduated from Catholic Memorial in 1963 and went on to play football at Boston College as a defensive middle guard. In joining Boston College, he would join his former CMH teammate and fellow defensive lineman, Bill Ladewig. Boston College was the last school that he visited and chose the school for its size. He also liked the spirit and the attitude of the Boston College staff. Boston College coach, Jim Miller, called Stetz “the finest player at his position in the nation”. He was one of the few players on the roster from outside of the East Coast. He started as a sophomore before being sidelined with mono. Following the 1965 season, he was an All-American honorable mention as well as being named to both the All-East Team as well as the All-New England Team. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1967. Bill Stetz grew up in Pewaukee. There are two NFL Film documentaries, Pottstown Firebirds and Pottstown Firebirds Revisited featuring Stetz.
